Starkham Wars

Post by pano »

My first thought was that a Star Wars game that borrowed heavily from Arkham gameplay would be just the tits. As I read on I discovered that what they meant was they were going to pretty much ignore other continuity when it came to their games.

I'm on board with the new movies resetting the EU (if that's what they do) and just putting all the old stuff in its own separate space. There's so much junk to go with the good stuff. As long as their new games don't contradict the movies then I'm probably fine with it. We can forget about all that stupid Revan and Vong and Mandalorian shit (I'm sure there's a Vong who was adopted by Mandalorians and happens to be a Revanite somewhere out there).

badfo pretty much said it. I think I'd prefer that they not base the games entirely on the movies anyway; direct tie-ins rarely work out in my experience, whereas using the lore of an established IP whilst not trying to 'transfer' a movie into a game nets us some pretty great pieces of work, like the KOTORs. Given the nature of how large the IP is, I'd say that there'll be as much of a mix of good and bad in the future as their has been in the past.

KOTOR is a weird example. It's fine, because it is so far removed from everything that it could basically do whatever and wouldn't step on too many toes. The brilliant thing about Star Wars is if you want to tell any sort of story that does pretty much anything to the Galaxy you've got like a four thousand year window to do it. There haven't been anywhere near as many Revan stories as there are Luke stories (there have still been too many Revan stories though).

The problem for me is that writers, developers, etc. have stuck more or less exclusively to about a 60 year window. We now have a group of characters with so much lore and conflict surrounding them in the EU that their achievements in the films are starting to look pretty insignificant (revive the Emperor hurr durr), so a reboot of the EU works well in that sense. And if the plan is from now on to have the EU (or games at least) work as a separate entity, that's fine.

badfo do you know if the Disney shizzle changed the book/comic contracts at all? I assume it's still all Del Rey and Dark Horse still, but I dunno.

Only really huge bad thing with Disney and Marvel is how terrible the Marvel shows are. I hope that doesn't happen with Star Wars. The TV shows have been good.

I think they have a reasonably similar team of peeps from TCW, with a few people from Young Juzzy as well. Dream Team?! (I could be woefully misinformed)

Best 8 second game out there.

If we're just talking Rebels, then get informed yo. Is there Live Action stuff being planned?

I know not of what you speak.

I don't know if there's live action stuff. I was down with the idea in the past but now that it's Disney I'm not so sure. Shield is terrible, and the show would basically have to be on ABC which means network which means crap more often than not and forced 23 episode seasons and other dumb shit.

So badfo been thinking.

We're going to get Battlefront. All good.

But the Arkham stuff made me think what a good Star Wars action game would look like with a good fighting system. Countering with your saber and all that jazz. Not dumb like Assassin's Creed where they just stand in a line and attack you one by one. Ideally with multiple characters. Make it happen.

So the list of Star Wars games they need to make:
-Battlefront
-Jedi Knight / Outcast / Academy ripoff
-RPG
-Arkham-style brawler
-The ultimate Star Wars game where you can seamlessly fly all across the universe and build fleets and fly down to planets and have companions and play with friends and basically do everything a game could ever do and be perfect at it

I just want to say that I've been thinking about this all week and this is a solid list. Arkham Jedi would be neat because you could counter ranged unlike ole Bats. The others pretty much just print money.

Apparently cancelled in 2011. Was supposed to be Nintendo exclusive. From a studio that released a bad TMNT game.

Lucas apparently suggested they should make the game about Maul and Talon teaming up to fight Darth Krayt.

I am so glad he's gone.
